The Comprehensive Development Classroom-Activity Based Program (CDC-A) provides individualized special education services for those students whose Individual Education Plans require a focus on basic functional academics and preparing students for independent living and working. Many students also need instruction in the areas of communication, social skills and community skills. Beginning at approximately age 14, students may spend a portion of their day in a supervised community job training site. By teaching students real world skills, the goal of the program is for each student to successfully transition into adulthood.

Currently the CDC-A Program is located at 17 elementary school sites, 11 middle school sites and 15 high school sites. Students served within the CDC-A Program have varying moderate, severe and profound disabilities. An appropriately licensed teacher is assigned to each classroom along with an appropriate number of paraprofessionals who assist with classroom and community instruction. As indicated in IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act), the general education program is considered as a potential learning environment for all students by each student’s IEP Team.

In addition to classroom instruction, related services such as speech-language, occupational therapy, physical therapy, vision services and hearing services are provided as indicated in each student’s IEP. Parent training may also be provided to assist the parent in understanding the student’s disability and/or the generalization of skills from school to home. The focus of any related service is to support the goals and objectives on each student’s IEP.
